With Spring Term election season kicking off at my alma mater, and election season just wrapping up at my current university….
This is an article that I wrote towards the end of my time as a student at LSE and in the aftermath of the student elections in which I ran for General Secretary. I knew the reasons that had motivated me to run and had observed a worrying trend in social activism on campus, which often reflects the situation in the world. After having been heavily involved in student life on campus and as a sort of ode/ or farewell to the campus that will forever be in my heart, I wrote this piece.; I think the message is apt..especially in the times in which we live, where ironically social activism has gained new and necessary momentum…
“I truly treasure the time that I have spent at LSE and I want the university to become a better place for students going forward after I leave. This is my two cents worth on how we can do that.
If you cannot open up a conversation then you cannot have a debate. And if you cannot have a debate you cannot be opened up to different points of view, nor can you find common ground and move forward in resolving issues and settling tensions between different groups.
I believe that we still struggle on campus with the very first of these criteria; opening up the debate…..”
